If you are thinking of a downgrade from vista to XP on the MX8711...get ready for some headaches...i advise buying a another hard drive in order to leave original drive intact with vista...you can always boot from it externally or treat it as an extra drive, also buy yourself a cheap USB floppy drive.you'll need it! it is lots easier than nLite slipstream
software!.....locate and download sata drivers from Intel site..all other drivers video, touch pad, ethernet , wireless , modem ect...are not hard to find..except for sound!...good idea to have all of this before you start
i took a shot in the dark and downloaded XP sound drivers for MX8710 from Gateway site and it works perfectly...these two notebooks are exactly alike..the 10 is built for XP and 11 for vista...you can more than likely get all XP drivers from MX8710...my MX8711...is now faster, more stable...it was a pain but well worth it
Good Luck
